Iraqi surgeon doctor studying in Britain succeeded in manufacturing liver outside the human body from stem cells under laboratory conditions, in an academic and scientific achievement opens the doors of hope to millions of patients who suffer from liver failure in the world generally and in Iraq specifically.

Dr. Nuri Hannon Jassim Agrash said that he «adopted a project curriculum for the manufacture of liver viable according to the urgent need to cope the developments in the treatment of liver failure», pointing out that his efforts «resulted in the manufacturing of liver outside the human body from stem cells in laboratory conditions».

Agrash is a specialist in General Surgery , Faculty of Medicine, University of Basrah, and currently a student scholarship for a PhD in surgery of the digestive system, Department of Surgery Faculty of Medicine at the University of Nottingham ,U.K..
He added that the liver transplantation is «The only effective method for treatment of liver failure and chronic cases of liver cirrhosis», but he also said «This magor operation faces  great determinants in the world's most advanced countries, such as Britain, most notably the scarcity of donors and the body rejection of the transplanted liver, noting that the situation in Iraq is much more difficult due to the absence of a center for liver transplantation.
According to Agrash that the first phase of the project included the «isolation of stem cells, examination and development and then test their ability to develop into other tissues, bone, or adipose or cartilage and testing them», pointing out that the tests aim to ensure «not to reject the new cells by the body in the future if planted inside».

He added that the second phase of the project is «manufacturing viable liver tissue  and with high functional ability equal to the ability of the normal liver in adults», stressing that «this achievement opens the doors of hope for patients who suffer from liver failure in the world and in Iraq».

He called for the Ministry of Health to «create a therapeutic and research center dedicated to cases of liver failure where the process of manufacturing the liver from stem cells be the main process», noting that this move will ease the suffering of many Iraqis.
The Dr. Agrash presented his research on this achievement at a recent conference of the Association of Surgeons in London, will be published in the Journal of British surgeons.

The conference is considered one of the important surgical conferences in the world, and in United Kingdom, and that the acceptance of the research and approval for publication are promising to academic achievement and scientifically significant, as well as the importance of the new discovery reached by the Iraqi researcher.
